The act of gaming has slowly and steadily become a thing that millions of people across the globe indulge in during their spare time and not only are they entertained, but there are countless benefits to their mental state. However, if a player engages in moderate and careful manner, then gaming can help to improve the quality of life for the player.

Mental Health Benefits

Stress Relief: First and foremost, gaming relieves stress by providing players with a different setting to that which they go through in their everyday lives. It can be a good way to limit disturbing thoughts, anxiousness, and stress and to accept relaxation, for instance.

Cognitive Skills Enhancement: Intelligence is required in many games in different capacities, including critical thinking, problem solving, or decision making. These are favorable cognitive demands in improving faculties like memory, space perception, and attention.

Mood Improvement: Some of the recreational activities involve gaming and by achieving a given level or a particular score, the brain is rewarded by releasing dopamine, a neurotransmitter that stimulates feelings of pleasure. This launch can enhance the mood and produce feelings of pleasure and satisfaction.

Social Connections: Playing with others makes human interaction but it has to be in the context of an online community or a group, which is again a plus. This in a way can help to reduce issues of loneliness and social isolation which is always good for one’s mental health.

Relaxation and Mindfulness

Escapism: Gaming can also be considered as an act of escaping reality as it enables one to walk away from real life for some time. This can come in handy in a big way in assisting players especially at the end of the day when they must take some action that ensures that they do not engage in the game anymore.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness in video games include those games that show slow and peaceful graphics like those mentioned in the study. Video games like “Stardew Valley” and “Animal Crossing” use people for simple and quite repetitive tasks, which are calming.

Flow State: Gaming may improve or develop a state of ‘flow,’ that engulfs players and engages them in the game. This state of flow can be seen as resulting in a feeling of satisfaction and relaxation as there is just playing and no more time and no more care.

However, occasional gaming can also act as a useful tool in boosting other moods and mental states and thus can be seen as a positive form of gaming and not just as something that is negative. Hence, stress reduction, mental exercise, social interaction and mindfulness generated through games can assist in enhancing the quality of life and consequently make our lives more joyful and less burdensome.
